Introduction :-

The Lord Krishna is believed to have been born in Mathura. This place is also known as Brij Bhoomi and is a major pilgrimage place for Hindus. This is where Lord Krishna played his flute and sported with the gopis. The town was later immortalized in the poems of Mirabai, a princess of medieval India who became an ardent devotee of Krishna. Mathura is famous for the Krishnajanmabhumi Mandir, Vishram Ghat and Sati Burj. Mathura is also an important crafts centre. Mathura belongs to the Agra Sub circuit of the Golden Triangle of India i.e. Agra-Delhi-Jaipur circuit. It is worthwhile to visit the Mathura region for the sheer pleasure of tracing the early years of the life of Lord Krishna.

History :

The origin of Mathura is ancient. It is said to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the popular incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It later became a part of the Mauryan Empire. King Ashok, the great Mauryan ruler, built a number of Buddhist monuments in and around Mathura in the third century BC. Between first century BC and first century AD, Mathura was the center for arts. The decline of Buddhism in this region following the decline of the Mauryan Empire saw the rise of Hindu influence. However, in the 11th century AD, Mahmud Ghazni destroyed a large number of Buddhist and Hindu shrines. Sikander Lodi from Delhi brought furter havoc in 1500 ,as did Aurangzeb. It came under British rule in 1804
