Lucknow the capital of Uttar Pradesh one of the biggest state in India. Its situated along the banks of river Gomti rose to prominence as the center of the Nawabs of Avadh. The creator of Lucknow as it is today was Nawab Asaf ud Daula. The city became known as a centre for Urdu poetry and courtly diction, and reached its acme during the reign of Wajid Ali Shah who was a connoisseur of music and poetry. It was during his reign that the British appropriated Awadh. Today, the city is dotted with remnants of its rich historic past. Legend says that Lucknow derived its name from Lucknau named after Lakshmana (a character in the famous Epic Ramayan) when his elder brother Rama gave away this part of the country to him. It is famous for its Gardens, Parks and unique archaeological monuments. From ancient times, the city is known for its silks, perfumes, jewellery, mouth-watering cuisines, and nawabi etiquettes. History :
Lucknow is popularly called the city of Nawabs and Kababs, both of which are famous here. Legend says that Lucknow derived its name from Lucknau named after Lakshmana. When Akbar divided the whole of india in to 12 provinces, Lucknow was chosen as the seat of Subedar of Avadh. Shaikh Abdur Rahim a nobleman of Bijnaur was entrusted with the jagir of Awadh. In 1732 the muhammad shah the king of the mugal dynasty, appointed mohammad Aamir Saadat Khanthe viceroy of the area known as Avadh, of which lucknow was a part. The rapid growth of lucknow dates from 1755 when the fourth nawab , Asaf- ud- Daula transferred the capital of awadh from Faizabad to Lucknow. Safdear jung one of more nawab of Lucknow lived and ruled from Delhi and his tomb is familiar landmark near the Safdarjang airport . After Saadat ali khan the rest of the Awadh nawabs were a uniformly hopeless lot. Wajid Ali Shah is so extravagant and indolent that to this day his name is regarded by many in India as synonymous with lavishness. In 1856 the British, as was their wont, pensioned him off for incompetence and exiled him to Calcutta for the rest of life. This was one of the sparks that lit up Indian Mutiny as the British residents held out in the Residency for 87 harrrowing days, only to be beseiged again for a further two months after being relieved.
