Introduction :

Vijayawada, in Andhra Pradesh is located at the head of the Krishna delta, 70km from the sea.  Earlier known as Bezwada it was an important centre of the Vishnukundin rulers in the 5C -6C and the headquarters of the Early Chalukyas of Badami. The present name is derived from the presiding deity, Kanakdurga also called Vijaya. The city, a major railway Junction is picturesquely surrounded by hills on three sides, with the swiftly flowing waters of the Krishna river on the south. Today it is a thriving business centre and a convenient base from which to visit varied historical sites. VIJAYAWADA is practically the centre of Andhra in all its aspects. It is an important junction in the Madras-Calcutta, Madras - Delhi routes, and probably the foremost town of Andhra. It contains three ancient temples viz., the Kanakadurga temple, the Malleswaraswamy temple and the Vijayeswaraswami temple. These are the three temples of Vijayawada.

History :

This city has triumph in its name. Vijayawada literally translates to "The Place of Victory".
According to legends, the city is named after the victory of Arjuna, the Pandava prince of “Mahabaratha”, who offered his prayers atop the Indrakeeladri Hill and won the blessings of Lord Shiva. The discovery of pre-historic remains belonging to the stone-age man all along the banks' of the river from Machilipatnam to Nagarjuna Sagar provides evidence that this part of the river valley was inhabited by the stonage man. A legend narrates that Vijayawada was established by Arjuna around the Malleswara temple and Indrakiladri hills in commemoration of Lord Siva's Darsan he had, and thus named after him as Vijayawada. During the British Raj the city experienced significant growth. In particular, the completion of the Krishna Barrage in 1854, and Railway Bridge on Krishna have helped the region expand its gricultural and commercial base.
